Icon5 '99 V6 4.0L Sat since July and won't start now...

So I got a new vehicle and my ranger was kind of left by the wayside since July. I went to go start it and it was dead. Battery is toast so I replaced it. Won't turn over, friend suggests a new filter, the gas in the old filter was black so I figured that was a good thing to replace. Still won't turn over. It's cranking but it just won't kick, I put fresh gas in the tank and nothing. Also, I put a new starter in last summer so I doubt it's that. Any simple things I should be checking that may help?

Check the relays for the starter and the fuel pump as well as the fuses, doubt they are the culprit but sometimes its the small things that get passed you. Turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to prime, if you can here it prime up check fuel pressure against spec for your vehicle. Check the wiring to make sure its not damaged. It's very possible that animals have made a home in your vehicle and chewed on the wiring causing a short or other problems. Check the connections on the starter and to the battery to make sure there is no corrosion. Try tapping on the starter to while turning the key, it's possible that it may have seized up from sitting for so long.

If the starter is rotating the engine, the problem is not the starter. Check the basics, an engine needs spark, gas, and air to run. Find out which of those you are missing.

Welcome to the forum

Spray gasoline or Quick Start(ether) into the intake and try to start it

If it starts and dies then fuel system is the problem, fuel pump or clogged injectors

If it doesn't start then Spark is the problem.

Where is the intake located?
