Alternator Wiring Pics

'03 4.0 Soch

Howdy, I picked up a 170 amp alt and wanted to re-wire it with 0/1 gauge wire to get the most out of it. I was looking at the stock wiring and it looks to get lost in between the motor, and belt pulley bracket. Did ya'll take out the stock wire and run your new one in the OEM locationg or did you take an entirely different route? I was hoping some of you guys could post some pics of what you've done, so I could get a better idea. Right now I'm running the stock wiring and nothing gets warm or hot, but I would like to get the most juice out of the alt.

Also, is it just me, but when I replaced the Alt with the high output, it seemed like I have MORE power and not less. I thought for sure I was going to lose power due to the increased drag, but my butt dyno tells me different, anyone?

4 awg or at most 2 awg will get the job done.

I dont have pics, I would just remove the stocker and route new the same way with a sleeve of some sorts. This is a mod i have planned but just haven't needed yet.

I got some extra 1/0 gauge left over from a stereo install and I was just going to use that. Running in the stock location looks like it would involve removing the main wiring wrap, and I was hoping not to have to do that. But I guess if that's the way to do it right, then that's the way I'll go. So, is the OE wrap just regular electrical tape, or is it some other special tape that they use?

Its in a plastic sleeve of some sorts. The tape im not sure about, but i have done some patch work. The electrical tape holds up well. I used the "3M Tartan" stuff.

I suppose you can just piggy back along the stocker. It just wont look as good. If that matters to you.

Unless you’re running auxiliary equipment, the higher output alternator will not put out any more power than your electrical system requires. The output is based on the system load or another words supply and demand.

If you’re going to run new cable from the alternator back to the battery, I would also recommend installing new fusible links of the proper current rating inline with the new cable.

Depending on the manufacture, the higher output alternator may not start developing power until it reaches a slightly higher RPM range than your stock alternator (current to rpm band (WYE versus Delta wound stator). This may account for the appearance of less drag.

what your wanting to do is called the BIG 3, that is alt to positive battery, battery to ground, engine to ground. the way you do it is just add to the stock always leaving the stock there. i used to have pictures of mine on my thunderbird but i just pulled it out the other day when i replaced the battery. read this and it will help you. just remember to solder the 0/1 gauge ring termianls and heat shrink around them. http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152355
