4BT Cummins Diesel Swap info/howto's?

Looking for a write up on this of any sort. Maybe a list of supplies and a general idea of what I'll be in for. Want to get everything lined up before I start the project.

I'm working with a 98 V6 w/ auto tranny, 2WD.

Any help would be great, thanks!

I have yet to see a write up on this.

This was going to be my project too, but a 5.0 donor fell in to my lap at the right price.

Your in for fab work here, custom motor mounts and trans mounts. Radiator needs an upgrade. You should be able to keep your stock dash as the vss on your truck is in the rear end. You will lose ABS. The CEL will be on 24/7 from a missing engine and you need the current PCM to drive the speedo.

On the upside the 4bt only needs power and fuel to run. I would say to plan a fuel cell and ditch the stock tank/lines all together.

This will be a bit of work and lots of down time.

Not to mention - diesel engines are -heavy-, front suspension work will need done.. usually involving either a solid axle, or swapping to a coil front end with some 850's on there perhaps, thats what a normal 4.0 runs with a big front end bumper.. a 750-850#

Thanks all... I just found the 4BT swap page last night....

I understand this will be a lot of work, but people have done a million swaps to come up with something like this. I'll be able to do a great deal of this, just not the fabrication part.

Only fuel to run? Meaning the Cummings I end up with probably won't be a computer controlled one?

I have read this engine weights 750lbs... that's crazy!

All 4bts are mechanical engines. If the commonrail computer controlled is what you want then your looking for a ISB 170. Which is a 170hp 4bt. You will pay nearly double for that engine.

So non-EFI... I'm not too familiar w/ diesel engines, but know a good deal about how engines work and the performance aspects.

I don't need that expensive engine at all.... Power is not my concern and the 4BT seems like it'll be MORE than I need! :)

I was expecting to pay around a grand for a 4BT... that sound about right?

Fuel, air and heat and compression.. Most likely you won't get one with a computer, and if you have the choice stay away from the computer, they just cause unneeded headaches lol

the fun thing about the 4BT is that you can take the turbo and injectors off the 12v 6bt and swap them into the 4bt.. moar power right there.

If you find an engine for a grand it may or may not need a rebuild. It will most likely have the non preferred injection pump. (the mechanical equivalent if efi) The pe pump is not wanted by most due to its lack of expandability when you turn the fuel screw up. (turning up the fuel screw is like a programmer for your EFI)

4bt's sell for 2000+

VE pump is the not wanted one..although it works fine, it's a cheap rotary pump. The P pump is the inline pump and highly desired.
