get the 4.0 v6 if you can, 3.0 has similar mpg but far less power, about 50hp worth.

go with 01 as your oldest year because they redesigned the ranger that year but 2003 would probably have most of the kinks worked out of it by then.

other than that, i recommend getting an extended cab for the extra space.

Yep, I can vouch on the 4.0 vs 3.0.. incredible amount of power.. you gotta supercharge a 3.0 to hit with a 4.0 can do

As for the Extended Cab, yeah.. I would have to agree with looking fo rthat, gives you more legroom if you need to scoot yoru chair back, and an excellent spot to store any gear you dont want weathered. I think I'm personally done with ever owning a regular cab, its just too small.

Good luck with it!! And definatly look for a 4x4 4.0

I suggest 01+, also due to the redesign. The 4.0L SOHC is a more powerful, more advanced engine compaired to the 4.0L OHV, but 01 & 02 both have their timing rattles...and '03 is an even more revised version as well. updated interior that;s imo, better looking and more upscale than the 01-02 interior. 03 the rattle was fixed. 01 was the first year for the 4.0L SOHC. My '01 has 78k and still running like new.....had the rattle at about 40k, but then it mysteriously disappeared. Havnt heard it since.

The Vulcan 3.0 is a very reliable engine....it's the ranger work horse engine in my opinion.

i believe all XLT supercabs got 4drs ratherthan 2, but don't quote me on that..i'm not positive. 01+ got 4wheel abs. Xlt, EDGE got standard a/c.

Both automatics and manual trans all have their issues.
