Just got home from grabbing a couple drinks at the store - as I was parking my brakes went absolutely solid (the pedal wouldn't go down even while I pushed / tried to pump) and it felt like the ABS was on. I was doing this while backing up and ended up backing up straight into a Cavalier with my Silverado!!!

Anyone have any idea what sort of problem I'm looking at - this happened once in a while usually when the engine is cold but never THAT bad. Any ideas anyone?

Thing is they worked fine the whole way home. This is something that happens randomly and doesn't usually last longer than 2 seconds. (this time it did though so I'm a little concerned).

I'll probably just be taking it in to my mechanic on Monday but I'd like to see if anyone else here knows what it's like... the best way I can describe it is putting a rock behind the brake pedal so you can't push it down and have it vibrating / grinding while not applying ANY sort of braking while doing so.

Chevys are KNOWN for their ABS problems. What year is it? I know a guy that if he plugs his ABS back in on his, the brakes are rock hard. so i'm willing to bet its an ABS issue.

 

It's 1999. Is that a common year for those problems? And do you think if I removed the fuse for the ABS I'd be alright? Or is there a specific way to disable the ABS - I have driven without ABS before and if it's going to cause me these kinds of problems I won't bother with it lol.

 

Thats the exact year i was referring to, yes removing the fuse will work. but beware that your going to have an ABS light on.

 

I'll try cleaning the ABS wheel speed sensor or w/e some people have said it's helped their problems and if that fixes the problem - great if not I'll just removed the fuse as I don't want to spend 800$ on it.
