My speedometer stopped working 2 days ago, along with the odometer. I took it in to the mechanic today and they ran diagnostics to see if any of the sensors were bad. They found that all of the sensors were working correctly. They said the problem is either the wiring behind the cluster or the cluster itself. I didnt let them fix it because i can replace it myself for cheaper. Is there anything I should try before I invest in a new/used cluster?

The problem with it is the needle sits at zero all the time and will sometimes jump up to 25-40 and just jump back and forth. It wont read the correct speed though.

Any suggestions?

I have similar symptoms when I kill the circuit to my VSS. Not only does this disable my speed limiter, but also my speedometer, odometer, and ABS.

Do you have any indicator lights on? My guess is the VSS connector is corroded and has a short.

 

I have no indiacator lights on at all.

 

Mine also does that but once i Reach 50mph and up it will read perfectly but once I slow down it starts jumping 0 to 40 mph or if i'm the gas at slow speeds it will stay at 0. I also have abs code 9 Open Circuit to Speed Signal So Hopefully someone can help us.

 

I had a speedo problem on my 99. I pulled the sensor and cleaned it with carb cleaner and reinstalled and all the problems went away. Worth a shot for one bolt and a little cleaning.

Step one is cheap.

Replace the VSS on top of the rear axle.

One 10 mm bolt and one connector. Very easy.

If that doesn't fix it, you may have a wiring problem. I've read the the connector below the driver seat is plagued by water intrusion and corrosion problems. VSS wires go thru there.

 

Is said connector on the inside of the truck or under the truck?

 

2004 doesnt have VSS.

Some of yall with codes/abs/brake light might wanna check the big black connector underneath the driver's seat for moisture, it can cause that to happen.. but once again, 2004 does not have this connector.

I believe the 2004+ speed signal comes from the transmission..

 

Yes, it is from the transmission OSS sensor on 2001+. The only Rangers that use the rear axle ABS sensor for the raw VSS are 98 through 2000.

 

Well crap...I'm not all up on the generational changes.
In that case I'd check the Output Shaft Speed Sensor like mentioned above. It's a black connector on the side of the transmission, close to the output housing.

Indeed, it's underneath the driver's seat "location" but underneath the truck on the bottom of the floor pan.
