Can I get a chipped key for low cost?
"Low cost" is subjective. If a dealer-programmed key is $150, then some would consider $75 'low cost'. Others may say 75 is too high.
That said, I cloned the only key I have at my local hardware store for $30 each. They're not factory chips, so the key has a battery.

I would prefer to disable the anti theft system entirely and use "old school" keys, but I'll guess that isn't feasible.

Yes, that's feasible. Get yourself a 'transponder bypass' installed. Then you can use 'dumb' keys. That's what we did to our 2002 Ranger. It was under $150, one-time cost.
