Clicking Relay
Clicking Relay
Does anyone possibly know why the relay under my dash that makes my blinkers blink and my flashers flash is constantly clicking like my blinkers are on when they’re not?… It even clicks after my truck has been turned off … It could be off for 20 minutes or more and when I go back and open the door it’s still clicking, when you grab it you can feel it pulsating… I bought the truck used & the factory relay was burned out so the guy got me an aftermarket… I thought it was a defective relay but I work at AutoZone and I got a brand new one and plugged it in and that one did the same thing…???
Welcome to the forum
Really need the YEAR of your Ranger to help on this one?
Electrics changed quite a bit from 1983 to 2012 on Rangers, but..............only "relay" connected to the turn signals and/or E-Flashers, is the "Flasher relay" itself, so is that the relay that is clicking?
The E-flashers have power all the time, turn signals only have power with key on
So problem could be in the e-flasher circuit, but you say there is no flashing lights?
Do the e-flashers work when you turn them on and then off?

Alarm
There is no old alarm system that I can see .... the truck is a 2004 extended cab 4x4 Edge model & yes it is the flasher relay , blinkers & flashers work but the aftermarket flasher relay just keeps clicking! Sounds like the blinker is on but it is not
Flashers work by "load", meaning they click on and off when there is a Load on the circuit.
Example, if you connect a trailer to the truck the turn signals will flash faster, some slower, because there are extra Light Bulbs being powered, the Load has changed, higher load is usually faster flashing.
If a turn signal bulb burns out, then turn signal on that side doesn't flash at all, Load has changed, not enough load so no flashing, this happens if you change to LED bulbs, they use less power so lighter load and no flashing.
And does the flasher click when key is on?
Or only when key is off
I am not there so can't say what exactly the problem is, but there seems to still be a load at the flasher when key is off, and best guess would be a shorted wire
And you have checked all 4 corners with e-flashers on, and all 4 corners light up
And both dash lights also flash
Other thing is a bad ground but not at the flasher, another device(thats on when key is off) is using the flasher as its ground, which is a load

Load
yeah All of the blinkers work fine & the flashers work fine when you turn them on The only thing that I can tell that has power when the key is turned off is the one cigarette lighter on the driver side… The one on the passenger side doesn’t even have wires going to it, but the one on the driver side if I leave my phone charger in there it stays lit when I turn the truck off .... When the truck is been off for like overnight when I get in it the next time I get in it is not making this sound when the truck is been off for like overnight when I get in it the next time I get in it is not making this sound less I’m just not paying attention when I get in unless I’m just not paying attention when I get in
Truck has a battery saver relay that cuts power to most systems in the cab after 20-30minutes, which is why it stops clicking
yes cigar lighter has power 24-7, all the time that is normal
Does it click with Key ON?

Key on ?
I will have to check to see if it clicks with the key on when I go out to work a little later today ... I did notice last night that there was a light flashing when I parked it at work yesterday & last night when I got home & upon further inspection of my owners manual it appears that it is the Anti-theft system light on the instrument cluster ..... but I have no idea how to set or turn it off
Key on ? Continued
Just came out to my truck and I use the key to open the door not the key remote And when I open the door the relay was still cooking from where I parked my truck at quarter after 10 last night… And when I turned the key to the on position and it was still clicking just doesn’t stop clicking
Theft light should Flash every few seconds with key OFF, it is a warning to thiefs
2004 Ranger uses Smart Junction box(body computer) and a Digital dash either of which could cause this issue
So I think it will be beyond "armchair technical support" at this point, you may need to take it to a Ford Dealer and have them do a diagnostic on the system
You can run instrument cluster in TEST mode, Google: 2004 ford ranger HEC diagnostics
It does some diagnostics but without manual for what codes mean it will be hard to pin point anything

2010 Ranger same problem
I am having the same issue with my 2010 Ranger. The clicking noise does not stop. It still clicks with the truck running or not. It originally started about a year ago and got to where my battery ran down. I put in a new battery and did not have any issues for about 6 months and now it is back.

Pull off the passenger side kick panel in the cab and see if the relay noise is coming from the SJB, if not then pull out one fuse at a time until clicking stops, then look up what that fuse is for
If clicking is coming from inside the SJB then could be corroded wires on the SJB connectors or the SJB itself, either way start pulling off the connectors and have a look
