Can anyone tell me if I can interchange ( move) The crank position sensor location? I bought a 93 Ford ranger with a blown Engine and the one I bought has a different crank position sensor Location. Can I splice the wires or can I just swap harmonic balance or will that work?
I will assume its a 2.3l SOHC 4cyl engine
From 1989 to 1994 these used a HALL EFFECT crank sensor with "disc" located above the crank timing belt gear
1995-1997 2.3l used a VARIABLE RELUCTANCE crank sensor on front cover and a tone wheel on the crank pulley/balancer
These are totally different sensor signals there is no "electronic conversion" possible, one is DC volts the other AC volts, but way different than just that
Your 1993 computer won't "understand" the signal from a VR sensor
In 1995 Rangers got the newer EEC-V 104-wire computer, 1994 and older used the EEC-IV 60-wire computer so switching those would also be hard
Best bet is to sell the 1995-1997 2.3l and try to find a 1989-1994 2.3l or rebuild your current 2.3l
I have read posts of people drilling the 1995-1997 2.3l front case to install the older Hall Effect sensor and disc, it needs to be VERY precise in locating it as this times the spark
I don't have links to those posts, just remember reading about it
