Diesel Ranger
Welcome to the forum
In 1987 305,295 Rangers were sold
1983/4 used the 2.2l Perkins diesel
1985 to 1987 2.3l should be a Mitsubishi Turbo Diesel
Diesels were not very popular with North American buyers back then, and still aren't today
We just have a "performance" culture which diesels just never fit in with
34 year old running Rangers are rare enough these days, lol, a diesel version with 4WD even rarer
If just 1% of 1987 had diesels with 4WD then that would only be 3,000 made
Thing about diesel vehicles is that they last, so probably more of these made it though than the gas engine Rangers, percentagewise
You can find them for sale as "Rare 2.3l turbo diesel Ranger", just not sure how many buyers there would be for "just an old Ranger" rare or not, Ranger never did and never will make to the same level as other "collector cars"
But you made a good buy regardless of price, if its something you wanted
You might email Ford and see if they have the stats break down of 1987 Ranger sales, they did have those numbers, just don't know if they made it thru the data purges Ford does yearly, it cost money to store data
And alot of data was in printouts and never transferred over to 1's and 0's for database storage

You would need to check if Ford posted those records, early 1980's were pre-digital/computer so not alot of stuff out there
Total Ranger sales for 1985(earliest I found) was 247,042 Rangers sold
If 1% were diesel then 24,704 were diesels, in 1985
Diesel engines were never popular in North America for "family vehicles", so 1% might be generous could have been .05% so 1/2 that number
They weren't "rare" just not popular, lol, there is a difference
