Ebay & PATS Keys.. Friend or Foe??

I only have 2 PATS keys and I was looking for information on remote car starters and stumbled upon this thread..

Lost my only PATS key today..

Anyway I figured it would be in my best interest to get an extra key made up but here is my problem.. Should I get one from the dealer.. $$$$$$$ or is ebay a decent place to get some blanks??

This place I found on the net looks pretty decent:

AMAZING KEYS.com FORD RANGER PATS TRANSPONDER

They have an ebay auction for 2 key blanks shipped for $40...

Just wonderd if anyone has heard of them.. I have access to a key cutter so i can cut my own key, I just don't have the blank..

I bought a blank PATS transponder key from the Ford dealer for $20. The price is the same and it was the right one. Works for me.

ok, I have to ask.. What happens if I make a not PATS key and use it as a backup to open the door.. But...

Someone tries to use it in the ignition?? What exactly happens.. I have heard some crazy things about PATS...

Does it just not start and thats it or does it completly imobilize the ECU/PCM so that ford has to re-program the computer??

Cause to be honest, I have 2 working keys I could just get a non PATS..

My understanding about the chip in the key is.... initially it allows you to unlock the ignition, but the ignition is disengaged.... After several tries something occurs, but not sure what. Never tried it !!

See thats what i am curious about.. What happens if you keep trying with a NON pats key..

I tried a google search and only came up with the N.E Patriots and the PDF file for the computer program ford uses to make keys when you don't have one...

I guess I could call ford in the morning and ask them... I am sure the dealership would be more then happy to give me info about something they aren't getting paid for..

a non PATS key will open your door and let you turn on the radio but if you try to turn the truck over the ignition will not fire... I tried it once and that's what happened (though I could be wrong about the radio... kinda fuzzy now that i really think about it).

Just the key will turn on the accessory, but wont fire the engine. I haven't heard of anything bad happening if you try to start it with the spare.

The more I think about it, the more I want a third key just because.. But if having a spare non-PATS key wont cause any serious damage to my truck should it get used in the ignition then it's a worth while investment..

You know, I think I will call ford 2maro. 1 to get the price of the blanks, but also cause now I have another thought.. What happens when you hit 8 keys?? Suppose you blow up, break, burn, eat, mangle whatever 7 keys.. What do you do then??? I know the chances are remote but these are the things that I think of at 1:30 in the morning while watching COPS, (Car theifs gone wild) edition.. What would they do if you damaged that many keys.. I mean could the dealer remove PATS?? My sister just got a 2005 FX4 lvl2 and it doesn't even have PATS.. WTF?? I thought it was in everything but she doesn't have it cause she told them she wanted a remote start.. That kind of blows that she can just use any key and I am stuck with the super stealth Tech that makes remote starters impossible..

Remote start is not impossible. Get another PATs made and stick it inside the dash. I think someone in here has done it.

well there is a module that we sell at Autozone where you take a "good" key stick it inside the unit and it has a wire grid.. The wire grid reads the key and beams it to the ecu to tell it that the truck has a PATS key in it.. But then I loose the point of PATS all together..

buy the proper PATS key (about $14) off eBay along with some extra remotes (about $10) they are cheaper and work fine
you do need two programed PATS keys to program on your own
if you only have one then you will have to go to the dealer and have them program it for you

There is no limit on the number of PATS keys that you can use over the life of the vehicle. BUT you can only "train" the Central Security Module to recognize 8 of them at any given time. I can't imagine why a private owner would need more than 8 working keys.

Ford "thrifted" PATS from all Rangers for 2005 but it is back on the V6 models for 2006.

You CAN install a remote starter with PATS but it requires extra hardware.

A non-PATS key cut to the same pattern can do everything that a PATS key can except start the engine. You can unlock the doors and steering column and turn the ignition switch to any position. You can use it anytime you want - it won't hurt anything.

I got my key from ebay. The guys username is dcfatboy

For $25 shipped, I got the ford Harley Davidson key. It works great. I had it cut at a locksmith. Then the dealer programed it.

I am sure that there is a way to program them without the dealer, but I didn't know what it was.

Total cost after everything was $40, compared to the dealers price of $90 for it.

Here is the link for his auction: Harley Key

Here is a pic of the key:

thanks guys, I called the parts counter at the dealership and the guy said he would give me 2 keys cut to my truck for $45.. Sounded like a good deal to me, he also said he would throw in the instructions to program them..

As far as PATS removal the guy at the service counter said that It was quite impossible to remove the protection from the truck due to the way its tied in to everything in the truck.. (I don't buy that, because all it does is stop the starter selenoid from getting power.) but what ever...

I called a local Perf. Shop and asked about a remote start and they told be about this company called VIPER.. they make a remote start and PATS bypass kit that will actualy piggyback the fine wire in the igntion and clone the code from a "good" key. It then powers when the remote is activated and convinces the ECU there is a transponder in the ignition. The best part is it only functions as long as the system has power. So either you come in put your key in the igntion and drive the truck away.. Or someone tries to steal your truck.. In that case the minute the brake gets hit the remote start kills the motor and the power to the module.. which in turn makes the PATS re-enabled and there is no way the theif can start the car..

As far as Remote Start, you can wire it up with a PATS key or any other vehicles manufacturers version of...all you do is bury a key in the dash as someone else already mentioned. I worked for Circuit City for awhile and they even had it as a disclaimer on the install sheet...saying that they needed an "extra" programmed key for some vehicle remote start installations. Just make sure you secure it well and bury it in there good...cuz otherwise, well you know what could happen.

or you could cut the teeth out of it - PATS will still transmit

You don't have to lose a key on a ranger when you do a remote start. I dealt with DEI products, which is who makes viper. They also make the bypass parts for the factory security on all makes and models.

When you install the bypass on a ranger, you don't loose a key. It looks more like a relay that you install.

I actually have one in my truck. I am gonig to install a remote start in it this weekend.

I can take a pic of the bypass and post it if you want????

getting a remote start unit with a capable bypass device costs more than stashing a PATS transmitter (key top)
your unit choices are almost unlimited if you stash the PATS

True

But if your truck ever got stolen and the insurance investigated into it and found that PATS was bypassed. You have now eaten all the costs on for the repair on your truck.

At least with a remote start, PATS only gets bypassed when the truck is remote started.

That is incorrect they do take a bypass module but this year DEI released a keyless bypass system that has a code already programmed in the module. Very pricey but you wont lose a key. That hurt you about 175 bucks

I never said that they didn't take a bypass module. I said that DEI makes a module that you can install that you wouldn't loose a key with a remote start. Some vehicles that you install have to loose a key. Which by that I mean that you have to stuff a key in a box and stash it in the dash somewhere in order to bypass the factory security.

If you use DEI part # 555F You can sucsessfully bypass the PATS system on your ranger.
