ECT Sensor
ECT Sensor
Hi. I have a 2000 ford ranger 4.0. I had a couple codes come up with lean issues. Turns out the intake hose/boot was torn at the accordion. It was also running very rough at 4 and 5 gear. I replaced it and check engine light went off for a second and then I got another code for P0118. I replaced ECT sensor not the sender thinking it could be that. Still not fix. The truck runs very rough and wants to stall. Also has a very bad smell coming from the exhaust. It’s almost like the wrong type of air fuel mixture is not right. Could anyone help.
Welcome to the forum
ECT sensor has a light green/red wire and a grey/red wire
The Temp Sender uses red/white and black/white wires
P0118 can also mean this sensors 2 wires are shorted together
P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input
The computer sends the sensor 5volts
If it gets back 3 volts then engine is cold, 40deg
If it gets back 2 volts then engine is warming up, 100deg
.5-1volt is 190deg, operating temp
So p0118 means computer is getting more than 4volts, Circuit High input, not temp high, circuit high
The new sensor may have a short, it happens, or the wires are shorted together
