ECU Stolen Ranger 3.2 Limited Diesel

Icon5 ECU Stolen Ranger 3.2 Limited Diesel

Hi all,
I've got a Ranger Limited 3.2 4x4 Diesel here in Brazil in an auction and it's quite usual they stole some important components.
My ECU was stolen, so I need to figure out what I need to do to start my Ranger again.
Some people say I need just purchase a new ECU according to my chassis number and reprogram it. Others say that I need all the components such as ECU, ignition, panel and key.
So, is there anyone who faced a situation like this that could give me some hint?
Appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forum

What YEAR is the Ranger?
And I assume its a manual transmission???

If its pre-1999 then you can get the same year 3.2 diesel ECM(PCM, engine computer) and that should work fine
4x4 is not related to ECM its a separate module

ECM just does engine operation so is match to engine size and petrol or diesel, and if automatic, transmission operation as well

Ford added an Anti-theft system(PATS) in our North American Rangers in 1999 and up, NOT SURE about South America
So if 1999 and up, and you get a different ECU you need to get matching keys for it, or have a locksmith cut and then program new keys into new ECM, this programming has to be done in the truck

My apologies for the lack of information. The manufacturing year is 2014 and it has a automatic transmission.

You have a T6 Ranger, we never got those in North America, our 2019-2021 Ranger are based on that model, but no diesel option


You will need a 2014 ECU from a 3.2l diesel with automatic trans, and in 2014 the ECU needs to be "married" to the other modules in the vehicle, so you need to find a shop that has the Ford Software on a laptop that can do that, they need an active subscription to Fords security data base to do it
Any Ford Dealer can do it but usually $$$, and they often will NOT do it unless they supply the new ECM, but worth a call to ask how much to supply and install the new ECM

Hope you got a REAL GOOD DEAL on this Ranger, because it won't be cheap to get it back up and running
If you could find a similar Ranger that was wrecked as a parts car that might be better, swap ECM and instrument panel, and ignition lock and keys

RonD, I really appreciate your help.
My scenario for now is: I have a used ECU but from other car, but the PN is according to my chassis number so in theory, I should just "marry" it with the instrument panel. The guy who said this works in a shop that makes new keys and he is quite experienced in this so I'm really confident that he may solve this problem and the budget is really affordable. Also, his equipment is a good and expensive one and he assured me that he could solve this.

If this option don't work, then I'll need to swap all the mentioned parts for you. It's still a good deal as the price of the ECU in a Ford dealer is more expensive than all the ECU kit in an used parts store, but this creates another issue for me: Should I get the same PN of the ECU kit according to my chassis or I could get a similar one with the same features such as fuel, transmission, manufacturing year and so on? It's quite tricky as this could maybe lead to a bigger problem.

I'll try to keep as far as possible from a Ford Dealer as they will rip me off if I go there, but for now I'll work in this sequence, first the keys maker, then a new ECU kit and last one a Ford Dealer.

ECUs are usually very very VIN specific

Yes, VIN in "new" ECU needs to be changed to match vehicle's VIN usually, and ECU needs to match cluster Odometer reading as well

It's been my experience in situations like this,

The guy that tries the least expensive route, usually spends the most money.

And has a bunch of un-useable parts left over.
