I’ve had my Ranger for about a year and a half now. It’s got about 120,000 miles on it to which I haven’t contributed a lot to. Today it decided it didn’t want to start.
Some electrical issues it’s had in the past that I’ve worked on and fixed/replaced in the order of when they were addressed:
Bad TRS/NSS
Crankshaft position sensor
Replaced battery
Camshaft position sensor
Alternator (most recent fix. Replaced with a larger version, cleaned contact points etc. This was about a month ago)
Today when I got in the cab, the dome light came on and the ignition *dinged* like normal when I put the key in. But, when I turned it to start it, everything shut off.
Then, I tried to jump it but to no avail. I checked/swapped fuses, checked the fuel pump switch. Nothin.
I haven’t been able to put a multimeter to it yet so it might just be a dead battery after all? But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t the jump charge it?
Anyone else have this issue or something similar or have some guidance for me? I would appreciate any help I can get.
You were almost right on the money!
Got it started again. Turns out the problem was indeed the connection at the positive terminal. The cables had come loose enough just so that whenever I jiggled it, my lights would come back on but there wasn't enough power to start it. So I just readjusted the cable, unplugged my subwoofer power cable just in case, and voila it turned on.
