Hello, I am having problems with my 99 Ford Ranger and the issue is when I turn my headlights on and hit my brakes power goes through my turn signal bulb instead of my stop light bulb. It does it on both sides. When I use my turn signals with my head lights my turn signal and brake lights flash on and off on both sides as if the hazards were on. When I hit the brake with my headlights and turn signals on the turn signals flash even faster as if a bulb is burnt out. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem or what they think could be the problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

 

So no bulbs are burnt correct?

If that's correct, try a replacement flasher relay. Pretty cheap if I remember right. And easy to replace if you aren't a giant lol.

 

Yes, the bulbs are fine. Would it be the flasher even if the turn signal light function works but the electricity going to the turn signal is not correct? I thought the flasher only controlled the on/off circuit break of the turn signal.

 

Are the bulbs installed in the reverse position ?

Also, check out the grounds for the rear lights.

 

I agree with Scrambler on where to start. Check the multifunction(turn signal/wiper/dimmer) switch also. Do you have a trailer connector/converter? It may be shorted out.

 

I am having trouble finding where the ground is located for the tail lights. I check a wiring diagram to try and trace the ground wire. Thanks for the help. Looks like its going to be a chase the wire game. lol.

 

I am not sure about the exact ground location but it is a common ground which I have heard is close to the License Plate area of the truck. Maybe someone else will come in while we are talking about it.

To me… here I go again, run new grounds if you can't be sure.
Test for grounding first through the sockets, see what kind of readings you get on a multimeter both in voltage and in resistance. A 12 volt reading will not always mean full current will get through, that is why I suggest a rewire when there is a problem.

Determine the power wires and then the ground wires and replace the grounds and don’t cut the ground wire off too short, you may need to do some clean up of the wire and having a longer lead helps.

I checked my 2003 diagrams. It shows the tail light grounds to be G205. That is located on the floor near the drivers seat.

 

Under it, that is where the feed-thru is.
