Electrical nightmare

1999 Ranger rwd, 4.0L I'm on my 3rd battery but I learned something tonight. I went to start my truck, it clicked and then was a dead truck. I had to have it towed as it would not jump start. Once home I disconnected the battery and then reconnected it. Started right up!! So the act of disconnecting my battery reset something; anybody have any idea what I may be dealing with? I was thinking PCM and can get one programmed and shipped to me for just under 200.00
