Engine idle problems

I have a no frills 98 Ranger with standard equipment plus air. When coming to a stop I press in the clutch and the engine continues to run at a high rpm. When this is happening the engine will continue to rev until I come to a complete stop. As soon as the wheels quit moving the idle will drop to normal. Turning off the air makes no difference. When this happens if I release the clutch the truck will maintain 30-40 mph in high gear even with my foot off the gas pedal. It acts like it knows when the wheels stop moving. I don't have cruise control so I don't know how it senses movement or if this is somehow coincidental. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how was it cured?

It is probably your Idle Air Control valve. Look for a silver valve on top of the intake manifold near the throttle body. It is secured with 2 bolts and has a 2-wire electrical connector. People say that you can sometimes get them to stop sticking by cleaning the piston with contact cleaner. I've never tried it myself, though.

I had already tried that and it didn't seem to help, so after reading your info I pulled it again and checked it closely. There appeared to be no sticking of the solenoid. I decided to soak it in throttle-body cleaner. In the process I realized there is a little cap on it that is used to keep trash out as air comes in when the device is open. I think it may have been stopped up and restricting air flow. I put some cleaner in it and blew it out with air. So far, so good. It seems to be working fine now.

Many thanks for getting me on the right track
Dave
