Engine Running Fast

On Monday I made the trip from Minneapolis to Duluth Minnesota. The trip was 335 miles round trip with a little running around in Duluth. I figured out my gas mileage today and got 335 miles out of just over 21 gallons of regular fuel. This put my mileage at around 15.8.

I have the 4.0L engine. I have figured on past trips that i should get around 20 on the freeway. But on this trip it seemed different. With cruise control on, going 74 MPH the engine ran at 2,500 RPM and the engine sounded like it was under a load. Not a real heavy load, but a light load.

The only change i have made to my truck since previous long trips is that I put in a K&N air filter and some new boche platnum single plugs. From what I have read K&N air filters and better plugs are supposed to get you better mileage.

I always use the A/C when going over 55, so I know thats not whats causing it.

My check engine light was not on and the over drive was on.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

wait...im confused. You drove 335 miles? if you divide 335 by 20 thats 16.75. Was that just one tank or did you have to fill up again?

I did a partial fill up in the middle. I put in 6 gallons at the 260 mile mark and then filled all the way up (the remaining 15 gallons today). i made sure i did all my math right.

I did make a mistake when typing this up. It should say 21 gallons of fuel. Sorry about the typo.

I change it to read 21 gallons in the original post.

The only way to draw a conclusion on milage is to average your data. It takes a minimum of three fills to do this.

As far as milage.. Just the quality of fuel used or high winds can knock you down a bit.

If you really think there is a problem.. maybe check for a dragging brake or low tire pressure. Do you see more brake dust at one wheel vs another?

No I dont see any unussual brake deposits. The tires are at what they are supposed to be.

When I make long trips I always Fill up right before I leave and right after I get home. The other 3 that I have had in the past couple months have all had at or above 20 MPG.

I always fill up at Costco so I always know im getting the same stuff. Except the 6 gallons I put i while on the road. And It was pretty calm all day while I was traveling.
