Engine Swap
Engine Swap
I am looking at buying a 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4 with a bad automatic transmission. I wanted to do an engine swap with a bigger engine or a diesel in that ranger. What engines / transmission would you guys recommend. Also what computer / wiring harness would you get with that engine / transmission.
Just trying to get ideas.

What do you want it for in the end?
I assume not a daily driver for best MPG
And 4x4 so may be mostly off-road use, not a street racer, lol
Diesel?
Do you like or work on diesel engines?
Benefit of diesel is better MPG and low end torque, but for the money they are not "performance engines", I said for the money, dollar for dollar you get better performance from a gasoline engine
If you want to learn about diesels then there are good options for that swap but have a good budget in mind
The least expensive swap is the 302/5.0l V8 swap, because parts are cheaper and its been done many times so info of whats needed is out there
A 302 with carb and distributor mated to an AOD automatic or M5OD-R2 manual, with transfer case, doesn't need a computer or much wiring at all
You can buy a full vehicle 1996-2001 Explorer with V8 and 4x4, these are all automatics, these come with computer and wiring harness you need along with engine and transmission, they are fuel injected and distributorless so less maintenance, but more wiring need to splice explorer engine harness to Ranger body harness
But its been done loads of times so lots of info on "what goes where"
Good article here on your 1999 Ranger swap(2000 Ranger is same as 1999 Ranger): https://www.therangerstation.com/Mag..._v8_swap.shtml
For diesel
Google: Ford ranger TDI swap
and
Google: Ford ranger 4bt swap
4BT build seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/cummins-4bt-ranger/

You assume correctly. I am looking for something I can do on the weekend and then take tail running after it is complete.
I always wanted to learn more about diesel engines.
I am a beginner to engine swaps. I have done one and it took me a month. Now I wanting to try something more adventurous.
