I’m having an issue with my engine temperature gauge reading on my dash. Before I replaced some parts it would barely register when idle and would raise when driving/reviving and drop back down when idling.
-I replaced the thermostat
-I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor and sender.
I have burped the coolant for hours now with a funnel kit. The upper radiator hose gets hot and there is hot air blowing through the vents.
The problem got even worse, the engine temperature on the dash doesn’t even move now. I even tried putting the old temperature sensor and sender back in. Nothing.
The engine doesn’t seem to be acting any different and I even tried unplugging the sensors to see if a check engine light would come on or a code, nothing. I don’t know if that’s normal.
Are you sure you have the correct sender and sensor parts?
Engine Coolant Temperature Sender (Gauge): Sends info to your dashboard gauge, often has a plunger-like tip, and uses specific wires (e.g., red/white/black)
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (PCM): Sends data to the Power train Control Module (computer) for fuel/ignition, has a conical tip, and uses different wires (e.g., green/red/gray).
I'm beginning to think maybe the engine coolant temperature sensor is not right. It looked different than the original, but I thought maybe it was a newer version.
They weren't much help at Autozone. The picture on the website didn't match what was in the box, they even got another one from the shelf and it looked he same. It had mixed different reviews, some saying it worked and others not. I think I'm going to just buy the entire thermostat housing and if it doesn't work then I'm out of luck.
Thank you. I bought those parts and replaced them. I'm back where I started. I can get the engine temperature gauge to reach normal levels when reviving the engine but it falls back down. I think I'm going take chance and see if the water pump impellers are worn out.
Sounds like a plan. Have you flushed and filled radiator? Checked for pressure on radiator cap? Perhaps jack up front and re burp the hoses. Could still have an air pocket. Just guessing here. Good luck. Let us know what you find.
