Good to post the code definition you are using so we are on the same page
P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input

Computer has these 5 codes plus a few others it can use for ECT sensor issues
P0115 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Malfunction
P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input
P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input
P0119 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Intermittent

Computer chose P0117 from the list, low voltage or low temp

What does Dash temp gauge show after 5 min warm up?
Should be just below 1/2 on the gauge, if its lower then thermostat is most likely stuck open
Start cold engine
Feel a heater hose and upper radiator hose, both cold of course
Let engine idle
Wait 2 min then feel both again
Heater hose should be warming up
Upper rad hose should still be stone cold like before, if its warmer as well then thermostat is for sure open when it should be closed, and P0117 code is correct, temp is too low for amount of time engine has been running

99' 3.0L P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Had a check engine light pop up shortly after washing the engine bay. Codes came back with a P0117 & P1117 (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 circuit low).

Found a sensor on Amazon for $20, Motorcraft part number 3F1Z-12A648-A or DY1144. As the previous post mentioned, on the 3.0L the sensor is the one with 2 wires that send data to the ECU, the sender is the single wire that sends the info to the gauge.

Took the intake hose off, unplugged the wires on the top of the motor that were in the way, 3/4" deep socket for the sensor, takes about ten minutes. Cleared the codes and started driving.

Been about 50 miles and so far no check engine light so seem to have done the trick. Hope this helps!
