Fix for Engine Racing Between Shifts
Fix for Engine Racing Between Shifts
After almost one year of ownership, I think I have finally solved the issue with my engine revving up between shifts or even in neutral while the truck is running. It was the most annoying problem I've ever dealt with.
Things I did to try and fix the issue:
1. Replaced IAC twice
2. Adjusting throttle stop screw until TPS read .96 volts (made it worse)
3. Truck already has the Ford high idle service kit
4. Searched for vacuum leaks, none to be found, fuel trims are perfect
5. Cleaned throttle body
After doing some reading and thinking I decided to slot the TPS bolt holes to allow for some adjustment, to get the desired voltage output without having to screw the throttle stop screw in so far.
I adjusted the stop screw until it just barely opened the throttle plate, and then rotated the TPS until the output voltage was in range.
It behaves perfectly now and comes down to idle just like it's supposed to, not floating at 3000 RPM until you come to a complete stop.

High rpm when shifting.
I have read all the posts on this topic and went through everything mentioned and had no luck. This is a very fruitful problem and yesterday I finally tried one last thing and it worked and it’s like driving a brain new truck. I pulled the speedometer off the rearend and now my speedometer doesn’t work and my abs light is on but I am happy to trade that for not having it rev 3 to 4 grand while shifting. Hopefully I can find a way to fix it to where I can plug my speedo back in and not have the rpms sky high while shifting. Hope this trick helps someone and if so please let me know.

Rangers only used rear ABS sensor for speed in 1998 to 2000, so I am assume you have one of those?
GEM module was used as a speed converter in those 3 years
I also assume a manual transmission?
And welcome to the forum
Engine racing between shifting gears.
I have a 2000 ford ranger with the 2.5 with a 5 speed and it’s a 2 wheel drive truck. I would like to know how I can fix this problem so I can plug my speedometer back in. I appreciate any help I can get.
