Fuel pump not working
Im not sure how I could have hooked anything up incorrectly. The pump is a pigtail that only connects one way and the relay only fits one way as well.
I was just driving one day, i put gas in it and went to drive off from the pump and it wouldnt crank. I tested the coil Packs and am getting fire. I can spray starting fluid in the air filter and it will run (until the the fluid burns off, about 1-2 secs).
So I then started looking at fuel related issues. I pulled the fuel hose off of the inlet side of the filter and was not pumping fuel. I changed the relay, (and the filter for good measure) and still got nothing. I just changed the fuel pump today and it is acting the same way... dead
it is a 4 cylinder 1996 model XLT

Have you checked fuse # 12 in the PDB? If it’s good, go to the inertia switch and check for power (12v) at terminal # 2 (Pink with Black stripe wire). If no power, try resetting inertia switch. If power is present, check fuel pump electrical connector (Pink with black stripe wire) for power. If power is present, try jumping the Black wire at the pump electrical connector to a good ground.
is there another PDB besides the driver side dash? if not then yes I just check #12 fuse and its ok. switched it out anyway with a spare to be sure.
on my pigtail for my pump I have a yellow (sending unit) a Red and a Black (pump) and a black with a yellow (might be a faded green) wire. Im assuming thats the ground I guess I could cut that and ground it straight to the frame to check for operation. and if it doesnt make a difference, just splice it back together.

sorry the "red" is actually Pink/Black I just checked the power at the inertia switch and Im not getting power. 3V was the most I read but mostly it was only mV.
Tried the ground idea at the pump to no avail.
Now...why wouldnt I be getting power to the inertia switch? that sounds like a fuse or a relay to me. I can feel the relays cycling on and off when the key is turned on and off

Smack it. Hard-ish.
Hit the red "reset" button on the top of it.
For a pictorial view of the PDB click this link Owners Manual and go to Servicing your Ranger and look on page 263 & 314
Unplug the wiring connector at the inertia switch. With the key on, check for power at the Dark Green with Yellow stripe wire. If should read 12V. If you have power, reconnect the connector to the inertia switch. Back probe the Pink with black stripe wire. It should read 12V. If not, try the re-set button on the switch. If you still do not have power at the Pink with Black stripe wire, replace the inertia switch.

turns out it was a bad sending unit. I was getting 12V to the inertia switch and to the connector at the pump but I wasn't getting anything at the pump itself.

How exactly did you fix the problem?
I am going through the same issue. Same exact thing happend to my ranger.
Ran outa gas in my front lawn. Put gas in it. And now fuel pump is not pumping gas.
Any suggestions??
