My dad has a 2001 Silverado that is in need of a fuel pump. He took it to brakes plus and they quoted him $900+.

I'm thinking we can do this.

What would be the easiest way,

-remove truck bed and access the pump from the top
or
-drop fuel tank and relace that way.

I was thinking that taking off the bed would be the best way.

If you have any advice on how to replace a fuel pump on a truck I would appreciate it. I know its a Silverado but this is a good forum with lots of information and I figured I would ask.

 

I would say taking the bed off is easiest. If your dad is not too old then he and you should be able to lift it off.

 

Definitely take the bed off. I had to do mine on the Ranger and it was no problem at all.

 

Removing the bed is the less back breaking way. Instead of having to drop the tank which can be a giant pain in the ***.

Im not a %100 but when replacing some GM fuel pumps the new one should come with a new pig tail. I had a blazer and didn't change the pig tail and few months later the fuel pump shorted out. just a heads up

When taking off the bed the only things that should need to be undone are the bed bolts, fuel filler neck, and tail light wires right?

 

Correct.
If you want to cheat (only works if your skinny, sorry fat guys)
Take a few 4x4's or 2x8's or whatever piece of wood you have laying around and just take the bed bolts out, and jack it up and put the wood between the bed and the frame (like a spacer for a lift). Its how i've done fuel pumps when its been just me.
Then you take the tire off, Shimmy your way up and under the bed and check/pull the pump out.

But if you can get a few (sober) friends to show up, taking the box off is no biggie. Taillights will disconnect via service plug behind the drivers side taillight (iirc) and there should be 3 or 4 bolts holding the filler neck in.
a t-50 Torx bit will need to be used for the bed bolts(should be 8 of them). They're going to have loc-tite on them too. so bring an impact gun.
