Gas Gauge Troubleshoot

Got a model year '92, actually built in late '91 with the gas gauge all the way past full since I bought it. I took the bed off and removed the plug from the sending unit, gauge still reads past full. This says to me the loose wire causing the peak Ohm reading on the gauge is somewhere between the plug I removed from the sending unit and the dash cluster. I know the dash cluster has been removed because there's all kinds of random crap hanging out from under it from past owners. I just want to make sure I'm on the right track before I (1) put the truck bed back on and (2) take the dash apart. Would it be as simple as removing the dash, or are there other connections between the dash and sending unit I should check/grounding wires I should check?
