Help I have a 93 2.3 2wd ranger where do I start I already checked the bulb and its fine checked out the fuses and they look good all the other b
ulbs seem to b working
ulbs seem to b working
My check engine light should come on when I turn the ignition in the power position with out crancking it over but the check engine light never comes on that's y I didn't pass smog already checked the bulbs and fueses
Under normal operating conditions, the MIL should light briefly when the ignition key is turned ON. As soon as the PCM receives a signal that the engine is cranking, the lamp will be extinguished. The dash warning lamp should remain out during the entire operating cycle.
i once failed inspection for this. i swapped lamps, checked all fuses and had power going to the cluster. apparently the circuit printed on the back of my cluster for that light was just fried. i replaced cluster and now it works. otherwise i don't know what to tell you.
If PCM has been reset or battery removed for awhile you may have to do the drive cycle .
93 not sure about. But my 99 has OBDll port under dash and I pulled codes were none but read iINCOMPLETE on all emissions items (catalyst) (evap) and so on. Have to do Ford drive cycle before it will read COMPLETE on all emmisions items before it will pass inspection. NOTE: CEL will not light up with ignition on engine off until drive cycle is done and all listed emmissions items read COMPLETE.

I believe the MIL on a '93 would get 12volts with key on and pin17 on the computer will ground the MIL to light it up and unGround it to turn it off.
So test which contact in bulb socket has 12volts with key on, the other should be a ground just after key is turned on, and then unGround after computer finishes self-test.
As far as I know you do not have to Crank or start engine, MIL should just go off after a few seconds when self-test is done, if MIL stays on then there is a problem with self-test or a code is set.
Also check fuses in cab fuse panel, MIL will be with other devices not on it's own fuse, so if anything else isn't working it could be a fuse.
And bad connections on dashboard connectors is not an uncommon problem in older vehicles, good guess as to the problem.
