How hot does the exhaust get?

not talkin pyrometer reasons. talkin paint reasons. tired of lookin at my ugly pipes. wondering if some black high temp engine paint will do the job or if the pipes will get too hot. any ideas?

Are you asking about the tips only? I don't think that they'd get hotter than your engine if you use that paint, but I'd be worried more about chipping. If you've got chrome tips and you paint them black, any sort of chip will stick out like crazy, and I think that you'd have to rough them up with sandpaper to get it to adhere better. But if you're not worried about that, DO IT UP! I was curious about it as well, post some pics if you do it.

What pipes? Manifold or tailpipe? If its the tailpip then get a tip. I think you are sol on the manifold.

It gets hotter the closer you get to the engine. The tips are cool but the 'Y' will be warmer. You can get paint to withhold the hot temperatures and use that on whatever you need to.

use black stove pipe paint on the manifold up to the y pipe i've seen it done with fantastic results

after that you could just use high temp engine paint to the tip
