which one? and is it worth it? will i NOTICE a difference? if so, what will be noticeable. its an auto 4.0 ranger.

 

I hardly noticed the difference with my 3.0L to be honest. The difference I did notice wasn't $350 worthy.

You should buy one. They have alot to offer.

 

I personally would only recommend getting one after a decent list of mods were done.

 

I bought an xcal 2 last year for my sport trac (4.0L auto), and it was a nice change in performance. I didn't notice it as much when I started using it, and ran 92 octane all the time. But when I switched it back to stock after a couple weeks on 87 octane (for curiousity), it felt like such a dog!
You won't get much benefit running an 87 octane tune, but the shifting will make a good difference. The main power increase comes from higher octane fuel.

A good tuner will firm the shifts up, raise shift points, and give a bit more power.

A tuner (imo) is the best bang for the buck, especially with an automatic (remember they are computer controlled and they can change anything with software).
Plus with an xcalibrator, you can change (on your own) gear ratios, tire size, spark, change some shifting stuff, change/remove speed/rev limiters, etc.
There are a few things that would change the way he would tune yours, like headers or aftermarket intakes. A catback exhaust normally doesn't change anything.
A new/updated tune from James (if you change something on the truck) is only $50, and he is pretty quick to write them.

I had the super chip in my ranger and it gave me a huge boost in power and brought my fuel mileage up from high 12's to the mid 15's for averages. It let me change tire size, gear ratios, shift points, shift firmness, and speed/rev limiters. It will also let you swap it back to their towing tune or back to the stock tune. I was happy enough with it that I got one for my new truck to. Other positive thing about it is that the one part number covers all gas ford v8's and the 4.0v6. So if you don't like it you sell it to anyone with a ranger, suv, or full size.

 

In the rear of the engine bay at the top just below the hood line.

It will be a four digit code starting with three letters and ending with a number, for example: ERR1

 

Ty im pretty sure that set of programs is from "Doug" who is very reputable on this site. He probably knows the most about tuning 4.0 rangers.

99% of everyone i have seen post or talked to says that the Xcal2 makes a VERY noticeable difference on their 4.0 SOHC. Most agree its the best mod you can do.

Im planning to get one myself.

You'll have to get with mike (sonic04edge). He has a 04 3.0 on 32x11.5. i THINK he went with the superchip too and he said he noticed a big difference in power and up'd his gas mileage from 12 to 18-19. he said there was another guy on here that sold programers that was very reputable. I aslo will be doing this soon due too soon be running 33x12.5's.
