License Plates lights not working

License Plates lights not working
I have a 96, 2 wd ranger. I had to take off the receiver hitch to get to the bulbs. I replaced the bulbs, but neither one works. I don't know if this affects the lights at all, but I have that plug in module for trailer lights.
Does anyone know if there is a fuse involved? Where would be a good place in the wiring harness to start checking for power? Does anyone know the color code of the wires that I am looking for? Thanks Tom

1996 fuses - common to all running/parking lamps including the license plate lamps (but not the headlamps):
Underhood #7
Dash #3
1996 wire color codes - common to all running/parking lamps including the license plate lamps (but not the headlamps):
Power = brown
Ground = black
Both run forward in the harness along the left frame rail and then into the interior.
Correctly wired, the conversion module should be tied into the truck's brake and turn circuits only. Should not affect running/parking lamps.

If the fuses are OK how about starting with a multimeter, set for volts, like 12 volts and see if you have any power in the socket and or in the main power wire.
Once you have that determined then you can proceed to checking other things like the grounds, or a broken wire.
Test out the sockets and if nothing move up to the wiring and any spliced joints from say the parking lights. find 12 volts and then you know where the power went wrong.
