Manual trans swap, ECU question
Manual trans swap, ECU question
Hello all,
I know this topic has been discussed in so many ways but I am having trouble finding the answer I need. I have a '97 4.0L AT 2wd and swapping in a manual trans. Went to a local j/y this past weekend and actually found a donor truck with everything I need, the only catch is the donor truck is a '94. My question is about the ECU. From what I can gather the '94 computer may not function properly in a '97...is that correct? I did, however, find on ebay a ECU from a "97 4.0l m/t 4x4 for a decent price. Is there really a difference between ECU's for 4x4 trucks and 2wd trucks? Hope this all makes sense and thank you for any help!
Brian

1994 and earlier PCMs(ECUs) were 60 pin EEC-IV
1995 and up are 104 pin EEC-V models
So as said won't work or even connect to wiring harness
Yes you can use the 4x4 PCM, there is no difference between 4x4 and 2WD as far as PCM is concerned.
A/T, M/T matters
EGR, No EGR matters
Engine size, of course, matters
1994 M/T should also have the speedo cable hook up with VSS(speed sensor), if not you should be able to use your A/T speed sensor in the same hole, your sensor would also have the correct gear in place for axle ratio and tire size, and same connector
See if you can get the Reverse light connector with the M/T, your A/T wiring won't connect to manual trans reverse switch so you will have to splice those two wires
