Doing a little project this weekend. My first real attempt at anything beyond just wiring up a simple switch or car audio stuff. Anyway, spent the last 3-4 hours just learning to solder and how to use a protoboard. Basic metering, etc.

So, just what can I be doing with the following?

 

Looks to me like you're making a remote volume/gain control **** for an amplifier.

i wish i could make cool stuff outta things like that...

i'd make a rack inside my truck just to set all the computer boards with all the little lights and cooling fans....

but i got no ideas as to what to make...that would be of any kind of use...or how to wire them...

Basically I've got some nice Sennheiser 'phones that need more power than my poor Sound Blaster Audigy can dish out. This will also get occasional portable use, hence the 9 volt adapters.

Bout to finish it, just got solder in the potentiometer. Unfortunately it has 6 posts but no documentation on what is what. I'm trying to figure it out with the meter, so it's a learning experience.

 

can u come up with an EASY yet cool/functional thing i could make outta stuff like that?

that had to cost you an arm and a leg for that stuff at radio shack, they are teribly expensive.

Yeah Radio Shack wasn't the cheapest, but it had everything in stock to begin the project. Otherwise it'd probably just be shipping towards me sometime next week. I just didn't have much in the way of chorse this weekend so I bit the bullet.

Anyway, fired it up and IT WORKS! Didn't do any quality testing yet, but I did bugger one thing up. Radio shack only sold 10k Ohm potentiometers in mono channel. I needed stereo. They had 100k in stereo but I figured this could make for a very sensitive volume control if the circuit expected 10k Ohm. So I went with dual mono pot's. Yep, one for the left channel and another for the right channel. That's alright because i'll mainly be turning it on and off. Heck maybe even a rubber band around both ***** is all I need.

No biggie, but I'll probably build this again now that I know a bit more about the project. I originally built it for dual 9 volt batterys and because of the dual pot's, I doubt I can fit it all in an altoids tin any more. So I'm gonna put in a DC port and use an old 12volt AC/DC regulator I had laying around. Should give it a boost over the 9 volt it's running off now.
