New member intro, distributor problem

Hello,
I just bought an 1986 2.9l Ranger, the original owner sold it to me, it has 90k miles on it, but was sitting the last few years. It turns over, and i assume there is not a fuel problem, but I cannot get the plugs to fire, here's what I've done, checked there is power at coil, changed ignition switch, swapped computer, swapped distributor and distributor module, plugs, wires, distrubitor cap and rotor. I did notice some wires on the drivers side look damaged so i suspect the wiring harness is defective, is this a common fault?
I also wonder about swapping out the distributor for a non computer controlled, is there a basic distributor that will work in the 2.9L? Or perhaps going to Pertronix electric points.

Thank you for the help!
