No crank, no start. 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0
I recently pulled my motor to replace timing chains. After installing it I went to start it and no crank. As far as I can see the harness is hooked up correctly. Any thoughts on what it could be? I realize I'm being vague but I was just wondering if someone else has had this problem.
Everyone who has own a vehicle has had this problem :)
No start.
Starter motor should have larger cable from battery and then a smaller wire
The smaller wire is what activates the starter motor, it should get 12volts(battery voltage) when key is turned to START
make sure it is hooked up
2001 will have PATS(passive anti-theft system) this will disable Starter Relay if wrong key is used, but Anti-Theft light on dash would be flashing rapidly if that happens
So I assume no flashing light on dash with key on
In the engine fuse box is where the Starter Relay is located, make sure all relays are tight, plugged in
If you have a manual trans then there will be a Clutch Pedal switch, pedal must be pushed down to the floor to close this switch, this switch passes the 12volts from the key to the starter to activate it
If you have an automatic this same switch is on the transmission, the DTR sensor, digital transmission range sensor, also called TRS or NSS
Make sure wiring to the switch is tight, DTR passes the 12volts to starter when switch is in Park or Neutral, so try starting in Neutral
Make sure Ground strap from engine to cab firewall got put back into place, thats the main ground for ALL the cab electrics, shouldn't cause a No Start but still needs to be checked or you will have problems with other systems.
EDIT:
Fuel pump is activated for 2 seconds only with key on
It is also part of the PATS system, no fuel pump power if wrong key is used
When you turn on the key the PCM relay in the engine fuse box should "click" closed
PCM relay powers the Computer(PCM) so you should see the CEL(check engine light) come on when key is turned on
If no CEL with key on, check PCM Fuse in the engine fuse box
PCM relay also powers the Fuel Pump Relay, not the fuel pump just the FP relay
You can download your 2001 owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
It will have the fuse box layouts if needed
