No Crank, No Start at times.
No Crank, No Start at times.
Hello 04 Ranger 4x4: 4.0 liter. Standard Trans. At times I turn the ignition switch all the way to the stop and the engine does not crank. If I repeat the process several times, I can get the engine to crank and start. It seems that lately I have had turn turn the igntion switch further than normal to get the engine to crank, and now this problem. I've owned the truck for 13 years, so I am sure about the situation of having to turn the ignition switch further than normal? Sounds strange, but true. Recently replaced alternator and bled the clutch slave cylinder. Everything was fine after alternator replacement, and I don't think clutch bleed has had any effect; just mentioned it in case. Any ideas appreciated.

Reads like there is a problem with the actuator rod inside the steering column
Inside the key cylinder hole at the end is a slot and gear, when you turn the key the gear turns
The gear pulls or pushes on a Rod that runs down to the ignition switch(under steering column above brake pedal)
The ignition switch is where all the electrics are connected, ACC, OFF, RUN, START

First thing I would do is to pull out the key cylinder, not hard to do and check if it is loose in the tube
Then you can use a screwdriver to turn the gear to see where it is loose

Thanks for the help Ron D. I guessed right and changed out the clutch interlock switch, also called the commutator interrupter and problem solved! Strange as this may sound, I now do not have to turn the key as far clockwise to get the starter engaged. Another electrical mystery.
