OBD code 16
OBD code 16
I have a 1990 Ranger with 4.0 V6 that gives code 16 every time I run a KOEO test but memory gives code 11. Truck is running well but I just can't get rid of this hard code. Is it normal to get the code 16 at the beginning of the test because the engine is not cranking or running? It is the only code that shows up other than the 11 at the end which I assume means all is well. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I assume I'm just being paranoid due to past problems I have had with the truck.
Odd code to get
In a 1990 4.0l code 16 means Electronic ignition – IDM circuit fault – Ignition Systems
No not normal
1990 4.0l will have a EDIS-6 ignition module usually on rad support front side or back side
Looks like this: https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-eg67...00.750.jpg?c=2
Key off
Unplug its connector and plug it back in, that cleans the contacts
May need to do the same on the Computer
IDM = ignition diagnostic monitor
Uses 1 wire from EDIS-6 to Computer, gives computer feedback on spark status while engine is running, but should be a complete circuit when key is on and engine is off
Shouldn't cause a running issue as it's just a monitor circuit
This code shouldn't turn on the CEL(check engine light)
Could be just a bit of corrosion on one end of the wire at the connector, causing computer to set code 16
Long shot is a computer issue
If you ever pull out the computer have a look at the circuit board, it has a clear coat on it but can get corrosion on the pins/slots and exposed edges
Also there are 2 or 3 capacitors that should be changed after 20+ years, easy to do, soldering required
These capacitor cause running issues when they leak or fail, so not related to code 16, just a heads up
When someone buys a "rebuilt" Computer, outside of cleaning the only parts changed are these capacitors, under $5 fix

Thanks Ron. I thin I have a wiring problem. Have done what you suggested but the code is always present on KOEO test. Doesn't seem to affect the running at all and doesn't trigger CEL. Will have to try and chase the wiring when I get time.
