open circuit to fuel pump

I have a 2001 ranger 4.0 it will run fine and turn the motor off and it won't start back up. After a while it will start and run fine. I put a scanner on when it would not start and it said I had an open circuit to the fuel pump. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?
