parts needed to repair cigarette lighter assembly? (both sides)
parts needed to repair cigarette lighter assembly? (both sides)
Hi all,
I recently acquired a 2008 ranger, ext cab pickup. For whatever reason, both cigarette lighter plugs need replaced. The one on the left I have nothing after the 2 wires. The one on the right is jammed inside the dash and appears beat up and mangled.
I want to replace both sides. It looks like the dash is notched differently where each of the plug housings to seat into the dash, so it appears there is going to be a separate kit for the right and left plug housing.
The dealership wants $100+ for the parts needed, and another $100+ labor for install. I couldn't get any descriptive information to do my own search for a better price. I wondered if anyone here knew what parts I needed, and if I could get them any cheaper?
Thanks

First I do not know if the Cig LIghter on the left and the POWER PORT on the right are actually the same, something tells me they are not.
The Cig LIghter is designed to handle the heat and the Power Port on the right is not, it is a POWER PORT is not a Cig LIghts so please do not plug your Cig Lighter in it.
Now are the two the same as the earlier, 01-03 Cig Lighter and Power Ports, again, I am thinking they probably are but check them out.
Take off the Radio Bezel and they both should come off with it.
From there it is a matter of just comparing.
The Cig Lighter, because of the heat, tend to crack the Radio Bezel where it mounts and depending on the amount of use, they get messed up inside.
Replacement on my 2003 EDGE is simple, nothing more than a little time; the Cig Lighter, if similar to mine, has a screw in the back and the Cig Lighter, as you will see, come apart in pieces while the Power Port is a two piece setup.
Again take it apart, take a look and then thing on it.
I have some extra power ports and cig lighters (may not have the cig lighter but will look), post up a picture of what you have before taking it out of the bezel and after, front and rear pictures will be helpful.
If I have what you need all I want is the shipping cost.

you are probably right about the cigarette lighter and power ports, good catch!
i got the bezel off, but i dont have much to show for it. i took pictures of the wires from the left plug, and the beat up mangled housing that was (until now) previously pushed back into the bezel.
it appears that the right port is still working, however the plastic housing around it is all mangled and wobbles around inside the bezel. i noticed that the well on the bezel is notched differently for the left and right sides. hopefully this does not create a problem!
it took a 7mm socket for the two screws to come loose at the bottom of the bezel (hidden just above the climate control *****). i will include pictures of what i've got to work with.
thank you so much, i am very grateful for the advice! and i am happy to pay for the parts if you think you've got what i need :)

If you can find out if there were any in these parts let me know.
The left side is the "cig" outlet & the right side is a "power" outlet.
When I mod bezels I usually put in a cig outlet in both locations as they seem to hold onto the stuff you plug into them better. Not sure if they're both wired into the same power source or if they're independent though.
Looks like the mounting ring on the left side on yours has broken off completely though. It can be repaired with some bondo or some metallized epoxy and some patience.
Can't really tell about the right side outlet, but the mounting surface can be repaired as well... although if you're not handy or don't have the time to deal with it, it may be easier to just replace the radio bezel with one with good outlet mounts.
I too have some new & buggman refurbished cig outlets & maybe even a power port as well as a bunch of the actual cig lighter parts... I don't smoke & won't let anyone who does in my truck so I have a good collection of them laying around
I may even have a bezel that would work too.

Have you looked in your local JYs for complete Radio Bezels ?
From the pictures and what the Buggman is saying you will need a another Bezel, maybe buy the whole thing at once and you might end up with some stuff free.
Another thought… take your VIN to your local friendly FORD Stealership and ask for part numbers and cost of the stuff you need, i.e. Radio Bezel, two Cig Lighters and see what they offer you.
Some Parts Guys will help you out and there are those that won’t… luck !

Yeah, JY's or making friends with a bunch of guys who hunt junk yards for parts would be the least expensive way to go.
I should have some 4x4 bezels in various stages of modding, if you can handle a can of spray paint & a little mess you can save a ton of money.
Last time I asked Ford how much a bezel was (no vents, no switches or outlets) they wanted around $125 +tax for a bare bezel.
I could probably do around $30 - $40 for a bezel, maybe $10 - $12 for 2 new cig outlets, heck I'll throw in a handful of cig lighter inserts just to get rid of some
Honestly never seen those rings though... I just unscrew the outer housing from the cig socket from the inner part & push it out the front... seeing as yours are broken off, you can just unscrew the outer ring & re-use that one as long as it makes good connection.
