Pats system (aka beating a dead horse)
Pats system (aka beating a dead horse)
Alright so before I get pounced on like a wounded gazelle, I have searched the forum and haven't found anything on this idea I have. Now it may be obvious to the smarter people in the forum but entertain me for a second.
I have a 2001 ford ranger with the Pat's system. 3.0 2x4. Now, I've lossed both my keys when my other car consumed them in a fire. So I'm f*ucked 6 days from Sunday. Can I hypothetically use a non Pats ecu to bypass the system? Since the program is within the ecu itself?

Welcome to the forum
You could, but there would be issues
Only year would be 1998 3.0l Ranger(fuel system changed in 1998) and it would require a $100 speed interface device and wiring to hook it up, also you would need to change CAM sensor/syncro to 3 wire version and run new wires to the 1998 computer
If an automatic you would then only have a 4-speed, no longer a 5-speed, that extra gear is inside the 2001 computer
In my opinion best option
A mobile locksmith can come to the vehicle and cut 2 new keys and then add them to the PATS system with laptop, 2 is the minimum
Or tow your Ranger to a Locksmith that can do Ford PATS, most can
Next best
Forscan software can be used to add keys yourself, look at the Forscan Forum for details, the software needs to run on a laptop and you need the cable to connect laptop to vehicle(USB to OBD2), and of course you need to have 2 PATS keys cut to match the lock
3rd option, pull out the 2001 computer and send it/take it to a Ford programmer, check with local speed shops/dyno shops, the programmers fine tune computers for best power but they can also Delete PATS
Ford programmers can be found on ebay as well, last time I looked it was $250 minimum for programming
And you would still need to have a key cut to match lock, or 2
Swapping to a 1998 computer would be hardest and least likely to have good results, and you still need the keys cut, lol
It would be possible to pull wrecking yard 2001-2003 3.0l Computer, with matching trans(manual or auto), and matching fuel(flex or gas only) with its Key(s) and ignition cylinder, and Door locks as well if you want
Look at your VIN, 8th digit, U is gas only, V is Flex fuel, that needs to match on vehicle you get new computer from
Outside of the ignition lock it should be plug and play
But it does need to come with matching PATS key(s) or you would be in the same boat as now
Can't use 2004 and up
1997 or earlier
1999/2000 wouldn't work either

Yes, just plain metal keys
But you would need a locksmith to make the 1st key to fit the lock, so you have something to copy at the hardware store
Ford or a Locksmith can use the VIN to get the Key code, so could cut a key from scratch that fits current door and ignition lock, but bring "Proof of Ownership" with you, i.e. registration/title and picture ID
PATS is like any other lock, it just needs the right peaks and valleys on the key edge and it has an added number combination lock as well, using the number combination embedded in the key handle was just cheaper and better that putting a keypad on the dash that driver needed to use on each start up
Combination lock prevents a thief from breaking out the "key lock" cylinder and starting engine with a screwdriver and driving away

thankyou for such an in depth technical analysis of the situation and explaining it so clearly for me. I'm very much not firmiliar with newer (newer to me) ford rangers my last being a 86 turbo diesel.
I'm gonna go ahead and ask Garrett turning to delete the Pats and hope for the best.
