I have a 96 Ranger XLT extended cab that I recently bought. It has a multitude of problems that I'm slowly fixing.

The problem I'm working on right now is the door lock do not work with the key. I had replaced the door lock actuator on the driver side (PO had buggered that up) so now the doors lock using the power buttons but the keys do not work.

The lock cylinders have an electrical connector like the one in this thread: How To: Replace Ignition & door lock cylinders | Ranger Forum - Ford Truck Fans (second picture)

I believe it goes to the latch set as it has 2 switches, door ajar on the bottom and the other near the top. The top one operates the same as the door ajar. Both of these switches are working fine.

I cannot find a replacement lock set (dealer says "so sorry") nor can I find a wiring diagram for this system. I have search pretty much everywhere for it.

So when you insert the key into the door lock and turn it it won't turn or does turn but won't unlock, or lock, the door?
Same for passenger side?

Do you have the electric or mechanical as original equipment?

On rangers or any other Ford door lock
Only electric on all doors would be a nightmare if battery died while doors were locked, lol, couldn't even pop the hood to get at battery



Or do you mean the Key Fob lock/unlock buttons are not working?
Keyless entry uses the RAP module and it can be reprogrammed for old or new Fobs

In 1996 models
Cycle iginition from off to run 5 times within 10 sec, ending in run(1998 and up you cycle 8 times)
all doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode

Within 20 seconds, press any button on the key fob you want to add to system and locks will cycle again.
Repeat for next key Fob, maximum of 4 fobs can be in RAP memory

Turn key off and locks should cycle again which means end of programming mode


If you get no response from door locks when you enter programming mode then you either don't have keyless entry or RAP module is not on line

Also have these for 1996 and 1997 as they are different, and late model 1996 could have 1997 system

The locks turn with the key but the door will not unlock. This is the same on both doors.

As far as I know this is all original, electrical only. There is no mechanical means to open via the key lock.

It did not come with a key fob so I don't know if ever had one. Would be nice if it did.

 

Thanks for the diagrams Ron. I was hoping for something that explained the wiring coming from the lock and what the top switch on the latch did?

 

Just for ***** and giggles I tried entering the programming mode (on-run 5 times) and heard the locks cycle. I'm assuming that a remote would work on this truck then?

 

Yes, if locks cycled you have a RAP module, so key fobs for your year could be added

Never ran across electric only door lock cylinders, scary IMO

 

Just curious but is there a particular frequency or number I should be looking for on this fob? Or how to find out other than calling the dealer?

 

UPDATE
After tracing wires and researching part numbers I figured the top switch is the illuminated entry switch which is only activated when you lift the door handle. The two wires coming off of the door lock cylinder are normally open in the neutral and right position. It shorts out in the left position. All it does is disarms the anti theft system.

So there is no way, at the moment, to lock or unlock the door. I will need to figure out what rod I need as well as the clip for the lock cylinder.

Rod, You were right I think in that there should have been a mechanical aspect to it that was missing. I'm assuming the PO had removed it to prevent someone from stealing the truck.

After seeing all the redneck engineering work arounds and fixes I'm ready to shoot the bastard....

 

It's not easy for me to change the door lock cylinder wiring, so i have considered having emergency locksmith service for that work.
