a vacuum guage is also one of the best ways to properly diagnose an engine problem. i used one (this was a hand held) to set the timing and carburator idle on our 66' Fairlane and also on my 93 F-150 when the engine was going bad. it can determine a lot of things but as u can see it helps with economy as well.
basically an engine produces maxinium vacuum at idle. when the engine is at WOT, vacuum drops. keeping the vacuum high (as seen in the guage link) will yield best economy as the engine isnt working as hard.
