I have an 04 Ranger Edge, 3.0. I am doing some engine work. I have already knocked out the baffles in the air box and freed up the exhaust system. Now, since I am reworking the heads, I am also going to do the Escape throttle body mod.
I have the 13.5 pound injectors in now. I am not really after any power increase...although it would be nice. What I want is to make damn SURE it does not run lean again. Maybe an MAF upgrade to? I don't know anything about it, really.
I want to know if I can upgrade to 19 pound injectors. Will they be too much for the mods I have done? Also, I have read that reprogramming the computer may be necessary. Are there any hand helds on the market that can do this? I would rather do it myself than take it the dealer. They charge too much, plus there no one around here that I would trust to get it right. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Its mostly because no one builds up the 3.0. I have one and ive done the air box mod and exhaust. Probably will do the e fan mod and thats about it. Injector wise i have not the slights clue. and are you porting the heads or what? And MAF wise i thought granatellimotorsports made one but i guess not
Thanks for responding at least. No, the engine will be stock with the exception of the knocked out baffle in the air box, the opened up exhaust and the Escape throttle body. I'm not looking to really build it up. The biggest thing I am after is making damn sure it does not run lean anymore. All I am having done to the heads is having the exhaust seats replaced and installing improved valves. Not over sized, but a better alloy with much wider margins to prevent the valves from over heating and pounding the seats again. Richening the mixture a little will help run things a tad cooler. I have some 19 pound injectors coming and am going to do it, regardless of whether I get good answers or not. I will just figure it out on my own if I have to. When this happened the first time around, I posted all about it here, in order to try and help others. Since I have gotten limited discussion on this when I need help myself, I can easily keep my results to myself. Again, I do appreciate YOUR response.
Are you not familiar with the huge TSB on the Ranger 3.0 heads? The bulletin says Ford used too soft an alloy on the exhaust seats. My theory is that if they were not running lean on the verge of burning up to begin with, this would not be an issue. I too am a mechanic. Since 1974. I have replaced literally hundreds of carbureted fuel filters through the years where certainly the system was leaned out, yet never saw engine damage as a direct result of running lean. With my Ranger, both times I removed the heads, all of the exhaust valves were crusted and white. That's a sure sign or overheating. Not from the engine overheating, but from the valves overheating from running lean. All I am after is just that little bump to the rich side to eliminate this problem. The 3.0 is pretty much a boat anchor so people are more likely to swap in a different motor than put a bunch of money into rebuilding and modding one.

ISSUE:
Some 2004-2006 Rangers 3.0L-2V "Vulcan" vehicles may exhibit:
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0300-P0306 and P0316
Rough running at various RPM
Rough idle
Misfire
ACTION:
This may be due to an engine exhaust valve seat recession causing a loss of compression. Refer to the following Service Procedure to diagnose exhaust valve seat recession.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Perform a power balance test to clarify if a cylinder is misfiring. Identify and keep record of any cylinder that has a concern.
Perform a manual compression test with the spark plugs removed to locate any cylinder that may have low compression. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Engine System, General Information, 303-00.
If no low compression is found per shop manual instructions, proceed with normal misfire diagnostics per the Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for the appropriate model year.
If low compression is found and it is a cylinder that had a misfire on power balance, perform a leakdown test to determine the source of leakage that may be causing the low compression. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Engine System, General Information, 303-00.
If low compression is found in a cylinder that did not have a misfire detected then proceed with normal base engine diagnostics per the Workshop Manual, Engine System, General Information, 303-00.
If the exhaust valve is identified as the source, replace both cylinder heads with the newly released service cylinder heads. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Section 301-01A.
