Remote Start on Manual Transmission with work around
Remote Start on Manual Transmission with work around
Aloha All, I have recently moved to the East Coast from Hawaii and really want to install a remote starter in my 2003 3.0 4x2 Manual Transmission Ranger Edge. I know it is not advised but I'm technically inclined, have electronics experience and convinced it can be done safely. I've looked for another thread that someone has already posted but none are exact matches. I happen to already have a Carvox CX999 so will try with this but I haven't started yet and will likely have some research before I get started.
The main points that believe that will make it safe-er is to wire in a NC magnetic contact on the manual stick shift that will NOT allow the motor to start unless it is NOT in gear and then I'll have to disengage the Clutch switch. Also, looking for a recommendation if a T Ignition harness is helpful in this case?
As I said, I haven't started yet but will likely get started in a week or so. Does anyone have experience with this application that is willing to steer me straight? Any insight on any parts of this install will be welcome. i.e. experience with the Carvox, the installation, the bypass method, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Try to see if Carvox CX999 can be used with Fords PATS(passive anti-theft system)
I can't find anything saying it can.
2003 Ranger V6 will have PATS installed, all 1999 and up Ranger V6's have it
This disables fuel, and starter motor unless PATS key is used in the ignition.
Ford sells a Remote start kit that includes an "electronic" PATS key ID, this allows it to start engine without key inserted.
Make sure E-brake is working good, leaving truck in Neutral can have serious drawbacks if it rolls away on you, lol.
You need a tremor sensor, that will stop engine if there is any vibration, i.e. misfires or someone messing with running truck.
Neutral sensor was used on older Explorer manual transmission, same trans as you have now, not sure how they did it, but there was a Neutral wire that came out the top of the trans, on the shifter cover plate, single wire so must have been a ground detect.
It was used for starting and 4WD Low shifting
I just start the engine and then lock the doors with second key set, go back in and finish my coffee

Thanks RonD
That is the feedback that I'm looking for thanks.
I will research the PATS issue but if the Carvox doesn't support it, does the suggested Ford version replace the Carvox or work in conjunction?
E brake is in good shape, and driveway is very flat. Also, if I need to leave it in gear, then the remote start won't work, as long as I can get the neutral sensor work around to work.
Again, these are helpful considerations.

This looks like an add-on to use with PATS for 3rd party remote start: http://www.directeddealers.com/manua...100F_02-06.pdf
Also read about Remote start units for manuals that used memory setup to enable remote start.
When you would park the vehicle, and wanted remote start later, you would activate remote start BEFORE turning off the key, when you turn off the key the engine stays running, so clutch pedal would need to be up, and engine running which means Neutral, then Remote Start will shut off engine after you close and lock the door.
That way the remote start "knows"/remembers trans is in Neutral for restart.
If door is unlocked, or opened, for any reason then Remote start is disabled.
But if door stays locked then Remote start can be used at any time after exiting and locking the door.

Here is what i have so far...
VEHICLE INFO
2003 Ford Ranger Edge 2WD 3.0L Manual Transmission.
EQUIPMENT USED/OWNED
Carvox 99X (already owned this) iDatalink ALCA bypass (recently purchased).
BACK STORY:
I have experience with electronics, vehicles and stereo installations but haven't installed Remote Starter alarm in the past. My primary goal is the remote start and the alarm is secondary therefore I've started wiring the Remote start module and flashed the bypass module. Constant, ACC, Ignition, starter, and Bypass wires are landed but so far the truck won't remote start. It won't remote start even with the clutch pedal depressed and the key in the ignition.
Questions:
1.The hood pin switch on the Carvox module is looking for negative polarity so can I ground it to think that the hood is closed? If not should this prevent the starter from working if not used?
2. The Neutral Safety Switch (NSS)/Parking Brake wire is currently not hooked up because the physical parking brake switch is not activated until the ignition is on, therefore at rest I can't show that the parking brake is on (I believe this is just for the dash light). Is there a NSS on this truck with a manual transmission and can this be tricked with a magnetic contact?
3. I'm also having trouble finding the wire colors from a newer 2004 Ranger wiring diagram for the Door Trigger Input, Door Lock/Unlock. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this specific 2003 Ranger truck?
BTW...I'm aware of the risk putting remote start in Manual trans but my E-brake works good and I don't leave the vehicle in gear. Also, I know about the pre-shut off routine that some manufactures use but I already had this hardware and would like to make it work.
Thanks for any help someone can provide.

Status Update
I got it to remote start (which means the PATS iDatalinnk is working) however it keeps trying to start after already started. I think this means I have the wrong Tach wire but I'm still doing the research. Then I have to bypass the clutch switch somehow.
I used the purple/white stripe to negative wire at injector and had to program remote start to see that for tach. I used a directed 689M for the clutch. search for it on ebay it was like $25. So where did you hook into the pats wiring? I have mine at the connector and it still won't read the key!! any tips?
