Replacing the shift **** on a 5 speed.

I'm trying to put a new shifter **** on my 2011. YouTube showed a few videos but none involved one like mine.
See photo.
The part you see on the end of the shifter is what's left after I removed the plastic cover.
I've taaped up with a ballpeen, twisted both directions with large pipe wrenches and the damn thing doesn't budge.
There are no setscrews or flats.
Has anybody had experience with this?
Under the plastic **** is this chunk of steel.

They're glued on from factory and can be tough to get off. I've found heat works well - just be careful not to melt the boot or anything else, obviously.
The hammer/mini sledge/wrench method may work for you without the heat: find a wrench that will fit around the shift lever but still cradle the bottom of the shift **** enough that you can hit the wrench (from below the shift **** up towards the roof of the truck) with a hammer or mini sledge.
Heavier hammer helps, and you may have to whack it several times. Heat will make it easier.

Good luck!
