Suresh, I pretty much asked the same thing and got the idea that this is the box of "choice" to a certain extent. One reason I was told is that it's easily ported for ram assist.

Another is that it's an outside-the-rail box that works well with the Ranger because there's not a lot of room inside-the rail.

My main question was strength. I was told the earlier ones have bigger sector shafts (which is the shaft that goes to the pitman arm) and presumably bigger bearings.

The thing about IFS steering boxes is that they are isolated from certain stresses because of the way the linkage runs. They don't HAVE to be as strong, and that's why I was curious about the strength issue.

Are you having problems? I'm about to put a Dana 44 on from a '78 F-150 and I was going to use a Toyota box possibly. Sorry to turn the question back on you, but what's your take on the box your using and why do you want to change?

I just haven't spoken to anyone who's really used one long term yet.

Right now the only problem Im having with it, is that the linkcage all the way up to the box. Its not straight to it. Ill have to take a picture of it and post it on here. But from the steering column it comes out straight and then it bends down its like using an extention socket on, then putting a 90 degree socket on it,then putting another extention on that, then one more 90 and the box. My friend has an F350 box Im going to see if that would work. If not maybe improve this one somehow. Ill find out more info. Thanks for your input bro!

yes yes i know Extension its moring shhhhh

zabeard 02-06-2007 09:12 AM

i would like to see a picture.

are you jsut afraid that with all the bends and such that it is weak?

ya i pretty much, i mean its lasted me this long and its working good but im kinda freaked out that im gonna hear a BAM and **** man zip tie for the drive home, what are u using?

zabeard 02-06-2007 11:35 AM

im going to rig it up the best i can, i have not see any good adapters, i will see what i can come up with this weekend.

EdGe_wannabe 02-06-2007 01:11 PM

I've had problems w. mine also, lots of problems.

The box I got from FoxFab basically sucked & now I'm on my 3rd steering shaft.

This is why I wonder about it. Most engineers in mass production would not "over-design" a piece -- so making an IFS box as strong as a solid axle type needs to be would be spending more money than it's worth.

I think I'm going to look into a solid axle F-150 or 250 box. Should be very strong.

My only questions remain pump compatibility in terms of pressure/volume and steering shaft hookup.

zabeard 02-06-2007 01:25 PM

I'm going to be upset if mine doesn't work... Al ot of money in getting mine at least.

*fingers crossed*

n3elz 02-06-2007 01:30 PM

I'm sure it'll work. And probably it's longevity (like any box, lol) depends on how hard you thrash it. My theory is just that those boxes won't hold up to extreme stress as well as one purpose built to sustain the load.

S10slayer 02-06-2007 10:27 PM

that f350 box will mount right up hopefully the column will too :) ill keep u guys on the update for that. im gonna do that in a week or so. this weekend ill see and hope that my sterring doesn't crap out on me if it does....then zip tie fun ill have lol

i have sat down and started figuin out gettin a list of parts that i can buy for my swap to get me started and i thought bout steering..

im not wanting to run a box..i am goin for 100% show look is what i want im lifting higher then normal just for that show, and details in the suspension..so my drag link will be to much at an angle..the only other set up that i can think of is hydro but i dont think that would be good for semi DD it wont be my DD but i mean ill drive it at times and stuff around town and to car shows..

i figured id ask this in this thread then start my own since we are talkin bout other options SAS steering..

nother thing..i know my stuff when it comes to yota boxes and what not and the steering concept but when it comes to hydro i get kinda lost i understand its 2 lines, pump, oil and rams..other then that im shot...

so i can either

1. get a box off something with pitman arm
2. hydro steer..

Discuss.....

zabeard 02-07-2007 12:44 PM

you still have to have a box, and i would think still a drag link...

the yota box will work fine for you since all it is really doing is valving the oil for flow and moving the drag link, the rest of the stress is in the hydro steer.

that is why they call it hydro assist it assists the steering box in turning them big arse tires.

as far as i know its not street legal though.

doesnt Jey have it..

so yota box with hydro assist would be the ideal thingy if it is street legal

EdGe_wannabe 02-07-2007 01:12 PM

You don't need hydro if driven only on the road. I found out that after wheeling & when I got stuck in a ditch that it's a B!TCH to turn, I was wore out after turning.

but see im gunna be lifted alot more and my drag link is gunna be at to steep of an angle..so when i brake the nose will dive down and pull one way and ill have to correct it.. and there is no way for me to get that drag link to less of an angle..so i gotta figure out something else..

EdGe_wannabe 02-07-2007 01:21 PM

Well hydro won't fix that.

runnin full hyrdo steering not assist..

http://www.akfabshop.com/alaskaoffro...arm_mocked.jpg

should just be 2 lines..

to pump in
and to pump out..

if im understanding the whole system correctly

zabeard 02-07-2007 02:13 PM

that could work, you just need to have some type of box still to hook your steering shaft into so it will change the valving in the system.

HighRollerII 02-07-2007 02:23 PM

bam'

zabeard 02-07-2007 05:32 PM

that should work! lol

you need 2 Dana60s, 4wS (4 wheel steer) ;)
