Steering shaft boot question (See pics)

This boot on my steering shaft is torn in 2 places. What is it called exactly? And how big a cause for concern is this?

thanks for any help

i am also curious about this. mine looks exactly the same. If I grab the shaft there is also a little bit of play in it. The reason I am asking is because I have a shimmy in my wheel that I am trying to diagnose and I have replaced almost everything else.

Hmmm... that makes three of us interested. I never really looked at mine. I'll have to have a look and see maybe that's causing the shimmy in my wheel!

well after reading up it looks like there are only sealed u-joints down in there and this boot is nothing like a CV boot that contains lube. RTV might be good for sealing those cracks.
I'm just concerned that boot is not replaceable unless the whole shaft is replaced with it

The part you speak of is it the inner tie rod or the actual steering rack in the center of the truck ?

I'm talking about the steering shaft boot in the engine bay, not the tie rod boots.

I just realized uploadit.org my hosting service is STILL down so you can't see the pic, sorry.

well my shimmy in my wheel ended up being a bad rear universal and busted front sway bar end links. changed them all out and truck rides super smooth.

Steering shaft play

Just was reading a older thread and they was having the exact same issue with the steering shaft having play . I'm talking about the shaft that runs from the rack to the steering wheel. Mine has a little bit of play in it and the joints are tight. Any help would be greatly appreciated
