Tail Light Interchangability
Tail Light Interchangability
Good Evening All
With the Wuhan Flu shut-down, I'm trying to keep busy (and sane) with some upgrade/ personal touches.
I've always liked the tri-color tail lights from the mid nineties, and am wondering is they would be interchange with a 2011.
Normally, I would go to the local you-pull-it yard and scope it out, however, the local yard is only conducting business by phone and credit card.
I realize that there will be some wiring involved. That should be no problem.
Thanks to all who respond and stay safe.

1993 to 2011 tail light housing are interchangeable size wise, I believe
Yes, problem is the wiring, Reverse lights are a given so won't be part of this
1993-1999 used a dual filament bulb for park and brake, and then a separate 1 filament bulb for turn, so 3 wires
2000-2011 used just a dual filament bulb for park/brake/turn, only 2 wires, brake a turn share a wire, the wiring difference is in the turn signal stalk(multi-function switch)
Brake light switch power goes in to multi-function switch and then out to rear bulbs on 2 wires, it turn signal is activated then the 1 wire for that side is disconnected from brake light and connected to Flasher
There are modules used for trailer lighting hook up that may work for your project

Thank you for the response and the insight.
I scoped out the wiring diagram on CD and it look like I would have to tap in to the line that powers the third brake light to power the additional socket for the truck tail lights.
I would then I I guess disconnect the brake wiring that runs from the brake switch to the multi-function switch.
What I had not thought of was the trailer wiring, and I thank you for bringing that to my attention.
Occasionally, I do pull a trailer so correctly functioning trailer lights are a must.
This project may involve more than I want to do.
Thanks Again

I was thinking you could use the Trailer light adapter to make it easier, a 2 to 3 wire adapter, which are less common
It goes at the rear of the vehicle
It just hooks up to the stop/turn wire for each side, 2 wires
Then has 3 output wires, stop, left turn and right turn, 3 wires
So you can use the older tail light housngs
You could also use it for trailer hook up, you could have two trailer plug ins, for a 2 wire and a 3 wire so you would be covered for any trailer wiring setup

Thank You for the insight to the trailer adapter.
I was looking at the trailer harness schematic for a 2011, however, all I see is a two wire set-up.
Do you know what years a two wire to three adapter was used? Or, is this an aftermarket adapter?
Thanks again for your time.

Yes, its after market, 3rd party
Older trailers used 3 wire, left turn, right turn and brake
Newer trailers used 2 wire, left turn/brake, right turn/brake
So there are adapters for both, 2 wire TO 3 wire <<<what you could use
And 3 wire to 2 wire
