So the last few weeks, I've been plagued by dead batteries. If it was below 30 degrees and the truck sat for more than 5 hours, the battery would be dead as a doornail. It was kinda of intermitant too which was odd.

I spent quite some time checking all my radio and emergency systems to see if something wasn't shutting down and it was all fine. So I went to the place I bought the battery at (Advanced Auto Parts) to exercise my warrenty. They hooked it up to their fancy-pants electronic testing machine which indicated it would take 30 minutes to test. After 11 minutes, the test failed.

So I got a brand new red top for free and another 3yr warrenty. I love it. The battery cost me $100 when I bought it in 2005 and I will never ever in my life have to buy another one ever again.

nice.....here shortly i am going to upgrade my battery to a dual battery setup.....putting them in my toolbox......whenever i do that i am going to go to the Yellow Tops........


BTW....what is the difference between a Yellow top and a red top?

to answer your question Maurice, Red Tops are designed to be starting batteries. i.e. designed to have sudden and short lived power drainages. As well as being able to recharge and recover quickly from a large power loss like starting a heavy duty motor.

Yellow Tops are Deep Cycle/Starting Batteries. They work just fine as a primary cranking battery, but they are also built to withstand heavy loads and constant drainage. They can take alot and recharge and recover quickly also

 

cool....so i can run 2 yellow tops.....1 for a primary battery and 1 for a secondary (accessories) battery...

 

Sure you can. We did that in our recovery/light service vehicles. And, I can tell you from experience, our diesels LOVED 2 yellows in the cold winter mornings when dumba*& drivers would forget to plug in the heaters! LOL

 

Yes, the yellow tops can be discharged down to a lower voltage without sulfating and suffering capacity reducing damage.

They don't have quite the peak output of the red top, but they have more than enough to serve as starting batteries. They are sort of a "hybrid" between a traditional deep-cycle battery and a starting battery.

 

My new Duralast Gold cost me $70 and has a 3 year replacement warranty, with another 5 years pro-rated. I'm thinking I should be all set for a while.
