Thermostate replacement from dealer
Thermostate replacement from dealer
My 2010 ranger check engine light came on.
So I had it scanned, it said thermostate is bad.
Since I bought a power train warenty.
I took it to the Ford dearlership I bought it from.
They replaced the thermostat but removed the cylinder head temperature sensor.
They said it would be fine not to worry.
But the mpg dropped really bad.10.55 mpg.
I am angry because they didn't tell me they were going to do this.
Does any one have any idea why the mpg went down so bad?
I forgot to add it has a 4.0 liter v 6
Thank You jrbsr

Welcome to the forum
What engine, 4.0l or 2.3l?
Guessing 2.3l since 4.0l doesn't have a head temp(CHT) sensor
If the CHT sensor was removed then temp gauge on dash wouldn't work and computer would throw a fit
Thermostat can lower MPG if its wrong one or leaking cause cooler running temp
Other than that may be a vacuum line came off

4.0 V 6
It has a 4.0 V6
It had two sensors on the themostst housing when I brought it to be repaired.
But when i picked it up from being repaired it only had one sensor, and one was removed.,
some 2010 Rangers had one sensor , and some had two sensors.
Thank You

Did you ask them why they removed a part without your approval and what lead them to believe the truck needed to have it removed? Don't be a pushover. Demand that they explain their reasoning behind such a thing.

No, it shouldn't cause MPG to go down that much, and CEL(check engine light) would be on if a Sensor was unplugged
It should only have the one ECT sensor, not the ECT sender(for temp gauge) from 2007 and up. only the ECT Sensor
There may have been two in the old one because it was replaced with two hole housing so they needed to plug that hole, and sender is just a cheap way to do it
If it was suppose to have two ECTs then there would be two sets of wires and you would see an extra set and connector hanging there not connected
The 4.0l SOHC thermostat housing was a known issue, it cracked and leaked, so it was probably replaced before, by the two ECT version

One of the set of wires have been removed.
It came from the factory this way, with two sensors.

I am not showing it after 2006 on wiring diagrams, but if the wires are there then it should be hooked up.
Sender was just for the dash temp gauge so had no effect on engine operation, so couldn't cause a change in MPG
And your temp gauge should no longer work, if temp gauge is working as it should then all is well
ECT sensor uses 5volt to detect coolant temp, 3v cold, and under 1 volt warm, computer monitors pass thru voltage so would turn on CEL within a minute if ECT sensor wasn't connected
ECT sender uses 12volt to detect coolant temp, because dash gauges are all 12v, no connection to computer, so unmonitored, temp gauge is the only monitor of this sender
So they are not interchangeable, the tips even look different, sensor is cone shaped, sender is cylinder shape
