I have a 01 Ranger 4.0 4X4 and I have been pulling a trailer with it for a long time since I mow yards for a living. Yesterday I decided to finally go to work on the old trailer to make sure the lights work on it since someone on Tuesday told me that they didn't. Who knows how long I have been driving around with lights and it's a wonder I haven't been pulled over; but that's besides the point. My question as I was testing the lights I had to rewire the trailer end where all the wires come out of the tongue and replaced the old 4 prong end that goes into the receiver on the truck. I also replaced the fuses for the trailer towing and turning signals for towing. I drove the truck today with the trailer and the lights worked fine this morning. When I got home this afternoon after mowing all day I noticed I had no lights again. I took the fuses out and noticed they had busted. So in question should I replace the 7.5 amp fuses with a bigger ones or rewire the whole trailer meaning that there may be a short somewhere in the wires on the trailer? Anybody have this problem when trying to tow?

 

Did you replace the light with higher amperage ones? I would only replace the fuse with a bigger one if you have increased the wire size to support the bigger load. If you have not installed bigger lights then you have a short.

yeah you def have a short somewhere, dont just put a bigger fuse in it. trailer wiring can be a real headache so it would be best to just replace the wiring especially if its a trailer you pull alot. also, i converted my 4 pin plug to the round 7 pin plug. it creates a much better connection between the truck and the trailer that wont corrode like the 4 pin connector and it allows the option of adding trailer brakes or accessory power for auxiliary lights and such.
