Various lights not working after fender bender
Various lights not working after fender bender
My '03 Ranger Edge and I had a parking lot accident the other week and my rear bumper was yanked out pretty bad on the driver's side. In the accident, the wires going to the license plate light on the driver's side were pinched off in two almost as if they were cut.
Since then, the following lights are no longer working:
- License plate lights (both sides)
- Instrument cluster lights
- Heat/AC control
- Fog lamp indicator light
- Fog lamps
Initially I assumed it was a Christmas light "one goes out they all go out" situation, and spliced the license plate wires back together. No luck. Next possible culprit was when the wires were pinched off, they caused a short which caused a fuse to pop. I double checked all fuses that were marked "Instrument Cluster" and/or "GEM" in the manual along with anything that could suggest license plate lights. All fuses appear to be fine from visual inspection & for continuity. It was then I discovered the fog lamps weren't working.
I have also double-checked the spliced wire going to the license plate light for continuity (good).
Any clues as to where I should look for issues? Is it possible something else broke, or a bulb somewhere burnt out that took everything else with it that was coincidental?
I plan on having the body shop do the work, but I'm trying to get a situation fixed that will give me some more drivability until they're able to take it in, and if its the "bad luck" that its non-related, it will be on me to fix it anyways.
Thanks in advance.

Not seeing a connection in those systems
Even trailer light wiring wouldn't account for instrument cluster lights
The interior back lights are all powered from the dimmer wheel which is powered from the main light switch
Its possible when the tail light wiring was damaged there was a short to main light switch that damaged it
Ford uses a Brown wire for all parking lights and license plate lights
So any shorted brown wire would cause no lights any where

I appreciate the reply. The interior dome lights are functioning fine, and I've been turning them on via the dimmer wheel a few times, for example if I need to adjust the heat/vent when its still too dark to see it right.
At this point, I am just going to make sure the body shop folks know that I was not able to get my lights back by splicing back the pinch I know about. Maybe there's another break somewhere else, or (as you said) the short zapped the GEM or some other issue I'm not seeing. One of the bulbs in the instrument cluster was on its last legs (some days would be lit fine other days be dark), but then for everything to suddenly go right with an accident like this is just too coincidental. If its the GEM the got zapped, having the body shop replace that on insurance would be worth my time. My appointment is set up with them for Monday the 23rd (I teach school, so am off those two weeks), so less than a week I need to worry about it.
Thanks again!

Dimmer wheel has two separate circuits, one for dome light, the other for dash lights, no connection to each other
Dome light switch has power all the time
Dimmer part only has power when Park/head lights are on
The main light switch will have a Brown wire that powers the parking and license plate lights, that brown wire also goes to Dimmer wheel to power dash lights
So if the is a problem with any Brown wire in the light system then no dash lights
And a short in the brown wire system could fry the main light switch for that specific system
Dimmer wheel has a brown wire in(from main light switch) and a light blue/red stripe wire out to all the dash lights, dim-able by wheel setting
Then it has two other wires, black/pink and light green/orange that activates dome light, no internal connection between these 2 sets of wires
Check fuse 11 in cab fuse box
And fuse 33 in Engine Fuse box

I certainly will. 11 is one I already checked (tested good), but not 33. I'll be sure to check that one this morning.
Dumb-A award to me, I've been driving my truck during daylight hours, so have not noticed that while my turn signal and hazard lights work, the parking lights don't work either to add that to the list. I should have made sure to check all those things, but I went out last night and checked all that based off your advice.
Its as if the vehicle system doesn't realize I have my headlights turned on, so I get no running lights. That'd explain the instrument cluster, the lack of fog lamps, pretty much everything in general. This certainly indicates that its that brown wire problem, or the switch "let out the magic smoke" when it was shorted, or there is another break in the wiring.

Fuse 33 in engine bay fuse box is the Brown wire fuse
Years ago I had a job where I went to work at 3am, I was driving to work and was pulled over by the police, wasn't speeding?
He came up to the window and said do you know why I pulled you over, I said no
He said because your dash lights are off........................................
They were off because that morning when I turned the lights on the dash lights wouldn't come on, tried dimmer and light switch on off a few times, head lights worked so I just went to work
I said how can you know that?????
He said because your tail lights are also not on and they use the same wiring
This was a Datsun pickup, so very common for the parking lights and dash lights to share the same circuit, with all car makers
No I didn't get a ticket, he was just giving me a heads up

And that's it!
Thank you for the heads up about fuse 33. Checked, and it was blown. A quick trip to that parts store with the Irish sounding name, and I was back in business before I even left the parking lot.
Of course, it's marked something as pedestrian as "Parking Lamp" as opposed to something that could be more helpful, like "Main lighting bus."
I deeply appreciate the help, and this will give me some safety peace of mind, at least for the next few days until the shop goes to work on it!
Thanks again!
